Forget summer heat as it slips from your grasp, just for a second… one of the best things about fall is that you get to bundle up and wrap yourself in layers to protect yourself from the chill of fast-approaching winter. The best texture to both protect yourself from the wind and chill of winter… is anything soft. When people think of soft, soft cashmere, soft wool and soft fur come to mind, but the simplicity of cotton is easy to forget.
Cotton is often out of mind because it’s so common. But good cotton is hard to find. Wrapping yourself up in soft, clean cotton is one of the best feelings (especially if you have a bit of a chill).
But as good as cotton is, it doesn’t protect you from a harsh wind, or the wetness of snow and rain. Protecting yourself against rain immediately brings to mind plastic, nylon, gore-tex and other non-breathable fabrics. But what about coated cotton?
I tested out a coated cotton winter jacket and was shocked by how resilient it was against inclement weather. It kept me warm, it kept me dry, and this particular jacket… kept me looking cool.
Now, going back to texture, I found that the juxtaposition of the extra soft cotton Henley against the harsh black coated cotton outer layer of the winter jacket was the thing that took my fall outfit to the style zone, making me forget about the cold and frost. Instead, it wrapped me up in a kind of warmth that I can only describe as a “Pumpkin spiced lattes from Starbucks.”
But it’s not a party unless you have a plethora of denim. Mixing chambray denim and dark denim is always a good idea. My only tip is to pair the look with a subtle, stylish boot or shoe. Go for a shoe choice that has the guts of a winter style but the softness of a pounded leather, then shoot for a color that isn’t black or navy. I slid in between with a Heather grey boot, which tied together the hues of the chambray shirt and stylish jeans.
Now, where and when you decide to wear this look is completely up to you… But, in my opinion, it’s best reserved for windy fall days, when the leaves are at their brightest and about to fall off, and you can still stand to sit out and enjoy a cup of coffee with a good friend. Keep warm.
