Hats are as Personal as Race Horse’s Names are Ludicrous
The Queen’s Plate is an annual event where people from all walks of life come out to see the jockeys mount their million dollar horses and race around the track at 45 mph. And when you do the math, if the horse trips at that speed and the 110 lb jockey goes flying… well, I just hope these guys get danger pay.
But aside from the risky job and high stakes betting, The Queen’s Plate is the best excuse to take a stab at wearing a hat. New hat, old hat, first hat, doesn’t matter. Remmeber if guys like Ashton Kutcher, Johnny Depp, Bruno Mars, Usher and Nick Jonas can rock the fedora (or facsimile thereof) with their neo-hipster style and laisee fair attitudes, you can too. Although the Horse Races are a bit more formal (especially during an event like the Queen’s Plate) but who cares, just pick a complimentary color to your tie, shirt, belt or shoes and go to town. I obviously had a theme but the gray and lime green webbed grosgrain band made it interesting and standout.
What Type of Hat Should You Choose?
Just go into a store and start trying them on. Worried about the size of the brim compared to your lapels? Relax! Hat’s are generally universal and picking the right hat is as easy as choosing the right sun glasses. Make sure it doesn’t make your head look too small or draw attention to features you’d prefer left hidden. Still having doubts…
Tip For Shopping For Your First Hat
Bring a friend and take pics of your favorite styles/colors to compare and review before making your final purchase.
Don’t have a custom Milliner? Don’t worry, most shops cater to off the rack shoppers and offer a wide range of styles that fit into any budget.
Take a risk on your headgear
The risk factor may be just wearing the hat altogether, or trying a new style or color. The payoff is a sharp look that walked off the pages of GQ. So go for it. And remember, Haters are definitely gonna hate, but you just gotta wear it with confidence… like everything else.
Oh and side note… hat’s aren’t JUST reserved for guys losing their hair or rocking “Dad-bod.” They are for anyone willing to take the time to style them into an outfit and rock it. That being said they also make great bald spot covers.
Invest in a good hat… it’s a good bet… see what I did just there
