I finally got to take my Proenza Schouler leather woven jacket out for a test drive and I’m finding it difficult to express to you just how much I love this piece. From it’s supple leather to the silk lining and intricately woven structure I am in awe. The sheer weight of it reminds me of it’s once runway presence. And for me… that’s significant.
I can remember the first time I saw an item in a store that spent time on a runway… it was about 15 years ago and I was absolutely stunned to see it. It was a pair of Dolce & Gabbana glasses. I spotted them instantly but had no idea what to do. I literally just held the case and was vibrating with excitement. I told my shopping buddy (my mom) that I HAD to have them.
The shop had no idea what they were and actually put a price on the case as well as the frames. being a kid I totally couldn’t afford them and ended up just buying the case but damn it I had my first designer branded item! Even if it was just an empty sunglass case.
From this sprouted a fashion junkie and label hoarder of unrivaled proportions. Today, I can say with certainty that I am obsessed with fashion, including Haute Couture, Ready-to-wear and the illustrious accessories that go with that level of fashion design. The clothes I love are no longer fulfilling a basic need, they’re enriching my soul in the same way an inspiring portrait from the 16th century inspires an art collector. I am a fashion collector but am more than willing to wear the pieces I collect rather than hanging them on a wall.
This particular piece designed by the two gents of Proenza Schouler (Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez) is one that I was equally enticed to wear yet nervous at the same time… it’s just so beautiful.
It showed on the Fall 2012 runway and if you haven’t guessed by now… it’s a womenswear piece… like I care. The jacket fit me like a glove and I just couldn’t say no to it in the store. For obvious reasons.
Luckily I got it for a decent price seeing as how it was a season old but price wouldn’t have detracted me from buying it… the moment I saw it I was like Captain Ahab and it was my Mody Dick. I needed to have it speared with a hanger and resting in my closet.
And I can say with certainty… I’m happy with my purchase… At least until the next Proenza Schouler collection shows this September.
