Met Gala 2012 Best Dressed
So much time and effort go into making up the women who attend the Met Gala each year that it is no wonder I have to rack my brain to come up with only three best dressed celebs at the event. It is an interesting journey getting to the top three. I take into account the event which in itself is surrounded and drenched in the fashion world. The funds raised go to supporting the arts, the A-listers at the event are invested and entrenched in fashion, and even the photogs know to shoot the models and designers over the actors and actresses. So that being taken into account usually I think the women who are best dressed are the ones who champion the event, the ones who go out on a limb for the sake of fashion. The red carpet is swamped with safe dresses that… sure… they’re beautiful, but are they perfect for this event?
Then there are the ones who try to go all out and “Be Fashionable” those are the ones that end up on the Worst Dressed List and the ones we laughed out wine out our noses while watching the Met gala live on Vogue or The Met website. But they already got their lime light so now I’ll move onto the best dressed! And since I couldn’t pick just three I have the top ten for your enjoyment. Let me know if you disagree or if I didn’t add your favorite because then we can debate about it. That part is my favorite.
PS I could have went to the top 16 but 10 sounded cooler so here are the 16-11 best dressed then I’ll let you eye the real gooders.
How dazzling is Carey Mulligan? Her scales sparkle like a knights armour! She just looks like a high fashion Joan Of Arc. Her spunky attitude and punked up hair got her into the best dressed list but the short length of the dress had a novelty feeling that put her last on that list at number 16. However at number 15 is Diane Kruger. I Loved this color, the feathers, and the way the waist of the hem was angled down to the back was a great touch to this Prada gown. Number 14 is a step sexier than cute as a button Jessica Alba. Her Michael Kors gold draped gown looks very statuesque on Jessica and that smile of hers kills it every time. She fits nicely in the best dressed list.
13 is the talented Scarlett Johansson who played her role as super hero/double agent on Averngers like a boss! Her curvaceous body was covered up in this Dolce & Gabbana dress but the beading was a stunning distraction. The starlet could have made it into the top ten but her beach ready hair did not go with the outfit and watching her break a sweat trying to get up the stairs was quite comical so 13 it is.
At number 12 I placed the luscious Rihanna in her Tom Ford croc gown. Some say it was snake others swear it to be crocodile, but looking at the pattern and the way the leather is not cut I would guess that it was stamped leather.
For 11 I chose the beautiful Renee Zellweger who has a special place in my heart ever since Bridget Jones. That place has since grown because of her gorgeous Emilio Pucci gown choice. I loved it on her and it really made her appear long and lean which is always good. The low back added a little bit of sexy to an otherwise super sexy dress… wait! lol.
Now that the preliminary moderately best dressed are out of the way lets move on to the big guns! The Top Ten. As Lenny Kravitz said in Zoolander, “These ain’t no slashes, folks.” So at number 10 we have:
Anna Wintour. With her snow white cropped fur jacket and white Prada dress she was like a frost queen with a side of building art. In a good way. Prada designed this dress with some metalic designs on the left side that crawled up toward the back. It looked lovely on Wintour and even though she wore something strikingly similar in 2003 the dress worked wonders. Also her make-up and predictable bob made her look in her late 40’s as opposed to 62. Well done grandmother winter.
Number 9 was of course, Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine.
Her Alexander McQueen dress appeared as snow on tree bows. Its infrequent fluttering feather appliqués took the McQueen line to a fanciful new place where queen fairy Welch walks among goat men and golden amazon warriors… AKA Mick Jagger and Karolína Kurková. BTW I didn’t add Karolína Kurková o the list of best dressed because she was wearing this hideous ear warmer… what was she thinking… Oh It was Rachel Zoe that decided how to style her… right… But it’s okay because Zoe looked like an oversized tassel from her poker straight hair to her tiered fringe dress. Yick.
January Jones stole number 8 with her canary yellow atelier Versace dress. This dress means business! The structure, the metallic gold inlays, the way her hair looked against her outfit… amazing. Although I could easily place her in first, there were other great dresses and gorgeous women who deserved it even more… Plus I felt that her Cartier necklace was way out of place. The teal the style the whole sha-Bang!
For number 7, Amy Adams in Giambattista Valli Couture looked so old Hollywood chic! Her hair… perfect and all I want to do is pinch her cheeks then set her up with a nice man. You know even though her fiance and baby’s daddy (Darren Le Gallo) is in the picture. Or is he? In any event this chika looked like a hundred bucks. What? That was a lot of money back then!
WOW – Lana del Rey looked dark and mysterious in her Altuzarra sparkling silver dress but it was the black cape and lips that set her apart and got her in 6th place. Her look was flawless and her new hair color goes well with her new dark brooding style. I dig it and Joseph Altuzarra (who was on the arm of the talented singer) should be proud. He of course had the attention of many of the guests present due to his recent CFDA victory. His future is sealed and his career is gaining momentum by the second. If he had stocks I would invest… WAIT! DOES HE HAVE STOCKS?
Number 5 was a controversial gown in that there are mized feelings about the dress from fashionista’s and critics alike. Many people have Rosario Dawson on their worst dressed lists but I don’t care who you are, this dress woud have looked terrible on anyone else. Rosario Dawson on the other hand took this dress through the Adams Family mansion and around Elm Street before making it to the Met Gala but she rocked this gothic Calvin Klein floor length leather gown. I am not sure if she had a BDSM party to attend to after but there is no doubt in my mind that the perfect accessory would have been Kate Moss’ diamond studded flogger. No seriously, Kate Moss has a diamond studded flogger. She got it as a birthday present.
Now I am not a mega fan of Vampire Diaries but Nina Dobrev in that Donna Karan Atelier dress makes me want to become a fan. When I was watching the live stream show I didn’t even recognize her at first but then her name flashed and I though wow is that… It is! She looked like such a lady! So I put her at number 4 because she is a definite vixen in this gown but I found it to be a bit Oscars appropriate and not as much avant-garde as I’d like. Still super hot and definitely a fan favorite.
When I met Jessica Stam in Toronto I thought wow you are hot as balls and tall as the CN tower! Her grace is actually quite astonishing for her age and her presence is unmatched. The John Galliano for Christian Dior Haute Couture dress that Stam wore was full of sparkles, wonderful seam work, and layers of lilac silk that made the dress seem to go on forever. Only Jessica’s height could pull off a dress like this though. On anyone else this piece would look frumpy and would cut them in half. The Lorraine Schwartz jewelry was the final topping on an already delectable cake. Not to mention the models new hair color. For obvious reasons I gave Jessica number 3.
P.S. I love that everyone is going dark for Spring Summer 2012.
There is something to be said about a custom haute couture piece, and not in the way that every couture piece is made but actually the pieces that are one of a kind. And who better to wear an amazing piece than number 2, the lovely Rooney Mara. With custom Givenchy Couture anyone would look divine, but Rooney pulled this look off effortlessly with her tight dark hair and milky white skin. So flawless she must bathe in stem cells!
Whether she is playing a queen or inacting one in real life, Cate Blanchett in Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen commands the presence and respect of any Royal’s majesty. The Alexander McQueen gown turned her into an oracular black bird, swooping elegantly through the other celebrities as if on air. But the way she carries herself is more than regal, which is no doubt why her stylist put up her hair. In that loose quaffed ponytail she seems more approachable and less like the virgin queen or the terrifying yet angelic Galadriel from Lord of the Rings.
It is with great pleasure that I give Cate Blanchett the great honor of number 1 best dressed at the Met Gala 2012. *Cheers *Tears *Speech! Her diversity as an actor is only matched by her beauty. Love you Cate!
