Coat Over the Shoulders Mega Trend
When I first saw this coat trend I was like… is this for real? But indeed my fabulous readers, it is. Derived from… who else, Anna Wintour, the jacket worn over the shoulders is a way to keep warm while looking like you need your staff to hold things for you. It’s the epitome of fabulous and wraps first world problems up into a nice little… jacket. The fact is, while wearing a jacket for warmth, this is probably a more strategic way to stay warm. Unless you have to block out the wind or do up the jacket, then you’re f*cked.
Yes, this trend was encouraged by editors of various publications, but I also feel it’s popularity was enhanced by the cape trend that is all over the red carpets and runways. Does it work to replace the cape for those not confident enough to pull off this Zoro-iffic trend? I’m going to say yes. But I’m also going to say that not all coats are suitable for this trend. For example the coats in the image above simply look like they were offered by a gentleman with a crush rather than a high fashion house with your most stylish needs in mind.
I feel that the best bet when wearing the coat over the shoulders trend is to wear either a truly fabulous piece that would be considered the pinnacle of your wardrobe. Otherwise choose a simple black, red, blue, brown, grey, or other solid color sport coat that will compliment your outfit but won’t take away from say the detail in a top of dress. At the end of the day refer to the trend as either an addition or the focus but never both.
Send me images of you wearing this trend and I’ll feature you on the Marquis of Fashion website with a link to your fashion blog!
