Erdem Cruise 2013
It was a full on floral explosion at Erdem as the images were released to press the models looked like fields of flowers that smelled as great as they looked. However through the petals, a darker edge could be seen to the collection. One that put a glare on the young models faces and changed the lighting in the room to a rainy Sunday feeling.
The juxtaposition was presented as part of a new way to display Resort 2013, fun yet morose, digital prints that could have been any shade were dark and muted, through white space on silk depressing deep blues and magenta. The stern face of the models gives this away but on the street the collection would be paired with lighter brights and would come across as the perfect resort look.
There is no other designer that created prints like this and pairs them with sartorial jackets, chunky floral pumps, and sharp collars. When much of the fashion realm is looking to the eighteenth century for inspiration, Erdem is in the conservative 30’s with restricting necklines, high-waisted skirts, and longer than trend hemlines. Though it is guaranteed that these pieces will do well in stores, it will not be because they are hyper-relevant to the trends. Though floral prints are big for Resort and will likely be well into Spring Summer 2013, the looks lack key elements for resort 2013.
Regardless their cult like fan base will lpick up the frocks, and cute jackets and will look absolutely great in them. If these prints are appealing to you I recommend looking at Canadian designer Sarah Stevenson who created these magnificent prints and uses them in a similar way if not a little lighter and slightly more airy.
What did you think of the collection? Was the dark palate too heavy for Resort regardless of the floral patterns?
