A Hemline to Fall For

From Midi, to Ankle, to Floor-length: The  Hemline for 2014

It’s February and I’m walking from the shows in Lincoln Center to my hotel room at the Hudson and from the runway to the streets I noticed a measurable drop in hemlines. Both on the models and regular fashion gals… this got me thinking… will the drop continue?

Today while watching the Pink Tartan show at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto, I couldn’t help but stare at the elongated hemlines. On simple sheath dresses to buoyant cocktail frocks, length was most important. Kimberley Newport-Mimran feeds into the concept that sweet and simple is everything. She also understands where to draw the line at tooth ache sweet and cutesy chic. Full skirts, thick textiles and as I’ve mentioned before… an on-trend hemline.

What does this mean socially? Are we maneuvering into a slightly classier society? Longer hemlines are a step away from mundane and help take us to a place where day-to-day is that much more classy. And by classy I mean classic… the long cut skirts lengths often hint at a recession simply because we splurge on fun when the money flows but buy basics when we feel the pinch. But this isn;t just my crazy brain thinking away it’s from an actual theory called the “Skirt Length Theory” which goes something like this:

“Skirt Length Theory
The idea that skirt lengths are a predictor of the stock market direction. According to the theory, if skirts are short, it means the markets are going up. And if skirt are long, it means the markets are heading down. Also called the Hemline Theory.”

Hermes, Chanel, Balmain, Gucci and Alexander McQueen all took to the trend with longer lengths for both short and longer styles of skirts meaning that the all too popular Pink Tartan Midi is about to get an updated look with a longer length. Let’s hope the markets don’t crash tomorrow.

Long Story Short… Longer hemlines are what you should be investing in for Spring 2014. If… you can find them in stores before March of next year.

Great! I honestly wasn’t sure about Pink Tartan this season, but it was – after all – my first fashion week here in Toronto. Love the post and that cape! Ahhh! Love it!

It’s true, you typically see the lowering of hemlines during economic down turns. I’m surprised it took so long! The economy has sucked for such a long time, hemlines should be long trains by now, billowing behind us.

Yes, I couldn’t agree more. Thank you for including that spinet re: hemline theory. I actually found myself discussing that very topic earlier today! I looked it up in conjunction with any relevant fashion authorities and poof! your site popped up. While it’s my first time on your blog, I have to say that it has been a LONG time since I’ve read all the way through a blog post, impressive stuff! Thx!

Hmm it seems like your website ate my first comment (it
was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what
I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your
blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still
new to everything. Do you have any points for rookie blog writers?
    I’d genuinely appreciate it.

Hey Gilbert, it’s a good idea to set a schedule and try to follow that for your posting frequency. Other than that just write until your heart is content but be genuine. Always make sure your words come from the heart.
      Thanks for the comment

Can I simply just say what a relief to discover somebody who actually understands what they are talking about on the web.
You actually realize how to bring a problem to light and make it
important. A lot more people must look at this and understand this side of the story.
It’s surprising you aren’t more popular given that you definitely
    have the gift.
