84th Oscar Best and Worst Dressed Preview
The Oscar nominees have been out for a while and I have compiled a list of who I think are the best, decent, and worst dressed of the bunch.
I have to preface this by saying I really enjoy a good film but am by no means a critic so to me they are all great actors! However… I can, will, and am judging them on the subject that I do specialize in… their choice, or stylists choice in fashion.
In the Best dressed category we have:
- Rooney Mara – The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
- Viola Davis – The Help
- Jessica Chastain – The Help
These are the actresses you have to be looking for on the red carpet as they will be getting the most amount of press because of their possible awards as well as their ability to dress like queens. Except for Best Actress nominee Rooney Mara… but her style is just inspiring and really makes you want to go out and buy bulk chain and wrap it around your neck to accompany your chain-mail couture sheath dress. Rooney Mara is being styled by Ryan Hastings who has worked with many celeb projects and will be getting his big breakthrough through Mara at the 84th Academy Awards.
Viola Davis who is up for Best Actress will be styled by the stylist who she puts her trust in consistantly through the years, Elizabeth Stewart. Elizabeth has done a bang up job so far and it is clear Viola is of the mindset why change it if it isn’t broke?
Lastly Jessica Chastain who was sitting front row at the Armani Privé couture collection when she heard that she was nominated for a Supporting Actress Oscar, is an advocate of Givenchy, and other haute couture lines so it will be no surprise to see her in Armani Privé styled by none other than the fabulous Elizabeth Stewart. Stylist gets around!
Now onto the second group of nominees… the not so well dressed but through 2011 they didn’t make me vomit!
- Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
- Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
- Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn
Trust me, it killed me to put Meryl Streep into this category because of The Devil Wears Prada AND because of Meryl’s Vogue cover but I have to be honest and say what I think… she dressed well for her age but not incredibly so. Don’t feel too bad for her though as Meryl Streep dressed by stylist Zoe Buck will be looking great and if the Golcen Globes have any say in the matter she’ll be walking home with an Oscar for Best Actress.
Glenn Close though an excellent actress is not the best dressed. Her work in Albert Nobbs was a lot better than the title sounds and a heck of a lot better than her dressing. Again, Close is dear to my heart but… stylist Chuck Thomas really has to pick it up a notch for the Oscars! You don’t want to look mediocre when accepting the Best Acctress award.
Michelle Williams was on my (and many others) Worst Dressed list of 2011 so I can’t in good conscious put her in the best dressed category here but nor can I place her in the worst because of the fact that she is up for the Best Actress award there is a possibility… no, a hope that she will crank it up and work it out on the red carpet. Well, I at least hope that Kate Young (her stylist) will. Kate is after all a former Vogue Editor (“former” being the operative word).
Lastly we have the Worst Dressed. The fuglies of Fugly town. Don’t worry I won’t be too harsh.
- Berenice Bejo, The Artist
- Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids
- Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs
- Octavia Spencer, The Help
All four of these women are up for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar and they each deserve it. Their roles were well played and nominations well earned, but their dress has much to be desired.
Berenice Bejo chose not to go with a stylist and just shop around the mall with some friends… Yeah you’re gonna have to do better than that for the Oscars my love.
I laugh every time I picture Melissa McCarthy eating that sandwich at the end of Bridesmaids. She’s Great. I really hope she wins that Oscar. Buuuuut… I also really hope Simon Tuke helps her into a fabulous couture piece that is as flattering as it is expensive. Lets face it, she isn’t a sample size but that’s no excuse to wear satin. Yick!
Janet McTeer needs to do something about her somber face. I get that it may have been one of the reasons she was up for the Supporting Actress Oscar from Albert Nobbs but come on throw on a little color to offset the depression! Maybe the little hot pink Alexis Mabille Haute Couture dress could work? But I am talking full on Mabille style with pink painted face and the rambunctious rose head piece! Desperate times… But alas Janet has decided to go on without a stylist. Another one bites the dust.
Finally Octavia Spencer, her cheeks must have got pinched SO MUCH as a child! She must HATE cheek pinchers… Oh yeah… clothes. She will be styled by the fab sisters Wendi and Nicole Ferreira who haven’t done the best job of styling Spencer yet but lets hope they read this and hop on the Marquis train to tantalizing Oscar Fashion.
Good luck to all the nominees and may the best dressed win!
