JUUN.J, Uneconomical or Fully Justified?
The other day I was shopping online… naturally, and I ran into these shorts designed by Juun.J a designer I have only recently become aware of. The item I was looking at was a 100% cotton short, black, Made in Korea, pretty standard. As I was going to add my size to my shopping cart I realized that they were $362.00! I gasped and fainted. Okay I didn’t faint but I felt like fainting to somehow show my protest for the blatant inflated price. But just as my mind was somehow starting to justify this price I realized… that was the SALE PRICE!!!
The shorts were actually $725.00 at retail! WTF indeed! Who in their right mind would buy a pair of black cotton shorts for $725? Even with a swelling bank account that knows no bounds this just seems like a poor investment. They’re cotton! would you dry clean these to keep the color? NO! you can’t. because they’re cotton… DID I MENTION THEY’RE COTTON?
So with a defeatist outlook on life (a new perspective I have only recently adopted thanks to “the shorts”), I have to be honest and admit that I have a feeling some fashion companies are taking advantage of the fact that yuppies (and fashion bloggers (oops)) spend a lot of money on clothes but that doesn’t mean you can charge a lot for a product that is simply not worth it.
All of this being said I have to admit I do like the JUUN.J menswear line and the collection for Spring 2013 was a slice of interesting pie. His aesthetic is using black and white in a variety of ways that mostly consist of well crafted tops and jackets and looser more flowing bottoms. He only designs menswear and is successful in his career. I have to throw in this nugget of information I read when I was doing some research on the designer. He used to design for Club Monaco… I only included this because it kind of makes sense. Cub Monaco is all about basics with the odd special piece thrown in. JUUN.J’s collection is very much the opposite. On the runway the mens looks are all special with a few classic pieces thrown in.
The classic pieces become more interesting because they stand out so perhaps that is why they have the elevated price-tag? Ooooooor he’s just lost his proverbial marbles and is as sane as a basket of Cray. That being said, the fact that I found these exorbitant basic black online means that buyers from certain sites thought they were moderately priced enough that their readers woud buy them so… maybe I’m more penny pinching than Scrooge?
What do you think? Are these shorts WAY over-priced? Would you buy them? Do you own them?
