Why Does a Man Getting a Pedicure Make People Uncomfortable?
So today I was treated to a luscious pedicure at a salon I frequent. The place is right downtown and the service is always exceptional. I have to admit I don’t live in the worlds most liberal city but a comment made by a senior citizen shocked me. Once I was all lotioned up and sent on my way the 60+ woman beside me leaned over and said “What? No color today?”
Perhaps she was joking the way a person three generations behind me does and I just didn’t get the humor or maybe she meant, why stop at a pedicure? Why not give in to some need within me to be a female and get my toe nails painted. Okay I admit, I was wearing a brightly colored shirt and slim light colored denim with red Prada flip flops but so what? Can’t a guy get a pedicure in peace?
When the woman posed her question I chuckled and said “not today”, but I really wanted to just blow her mind and say… “actually yes. I’ll take hot pink alternating with banana yellow please.” But then I’d have to take it off when I got home and I’ pretty sure nail polish remover is more toxic than those barrels of green ooze you used to see on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Here is a question for the men who do get pedicures:
Have you ever gotten odd looks or strange questions from the other patrons in the salon? Or the staff themselves? If so how did you deal with it?
At the end of the day I won’t stop going to get my pedi but I will probably book it with a few male friends all at the same time so we have a man pedicure take-over in the salon. I’ll be sure to invite my biker friends who I KNOW love getting pedi’s.
