The women’s Fall 2012 Ralph Lauren collection was a mixture of traditional English style men’s suiting complete with tie and bowler hat and the lavish party dresses encrusted with crystals and worn to the most glamorous of soirees.
Many of the daywear looks could be pictured on a man walking along a cobblestone path and checking his pocket watch for the time. The main difference between these looks and a man’s suit were the shorter cropped suit coats, the occasional wide legged pants, and the peterpan collars on the shirts. The checked ties worn which were tucked neatly into petticoats, could very easily be taken off and passed to any man. The thickness and patterns were straight out of traditional menswear and were used to create a polished sartorial style.
Later into the show after the top hats and men’s inspired tuxedos, came the over the top glamorous full length dresses which bared no resemblance nor did they continue the story that was shown moments before. Though the dresses were stunningly beautiful and ornate with detail they appeared to be from a different collection altogether. Regardless it is certain that these dresses will be seen on the red carpet at the Oscars.
If it wasn’t for the drastic change between day and evening, the collection would have been flawless. It could be argued that the show was meant to present a vast difference in women’s wear and women in general however a show is a show and it is depicted exactly the way Mr. Lauren wanted it to be shown whether it is to the liking of the audience or not.
