Nearly all the looks were floor length with pilled wool as thick as felt, slick leathers added volume to upper arms and collars, and the face net hats. The toques were pulled down over the models faces in a net like fashion each one different than the last. Were these an ode to the McQueen collection last season? If so the materials of these facial netting were far more casual and equally as un-wearable.
It wouldn’t be a Rick Owens collection without a dropped crotch and sure enough there it was. Loud and proud in blacks and grey’s that introduced a new element to the show as everything up until that point was floor length skirts and dresses. The overly voluminous coats were present for the Fall 2012 collection the same way they have been on nearly all shows throughout the fashion weeks.
About halfway through the collection Rick Owens used shearling material to create a massive collared short jacket with very full oblong sleeves. The effect was stellar because of the cropped style, blush color, and black full length dress pouring out from under the fitted waist. One other element that made this look increasingly more interesting was the finger less mohair gloves that matched the color of the shearling jacket. The style of these furry little hand warmers were definitely a street sheik kind of style that will be popular among Rick Owens fans.
Quickly in the men’s and women’s markets Rick Owens has become known for his outstanding and unique shoe designs, this season seemed to show a black and brown platformed round toe boot that was loose at the ankles and rode high up on the calves. The designer decided to use a crocodile stamped leather that doubled as a vehicle to drive up the luxury factor in the collections.
Though there was a oversized check on a few of the final evening wear looks, it would be nice to see some pops of color in his collection moving forward. But as the famed designer walked out for his final bow, it was clear that the audience was pleased with the show just the way it was. Or perhaps it was the great mans skirt that he was wearing. Who can say?
