Rounded shoulders are certainly a trend for Spring 2012 from Christian Dior to Balenciaga.
When looking at silhouettes from the 50’s and 60’s, the rounded shoulder was a mega trend, observed by both women and men. This season the runway was chalk full of the rounded shoulder, most notably in jackets, updated to fit into the modern context of fashion.
While in the 1950’s, dresses from A-line to shift featured rounded shoulders, today the rounded shoulder is sh0wcased on jackets at Balenciaga, Rick Owens, Jil Sander, Yves Saint Laurent, and Prada.
As trends go, this will be unflattering to many people as well as hard to find… but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be present for Spring 2012.
Exclusivity of a trend is a powerful thing and makes certain trends almost as important as the fashion shows themselves. Trends are also as important as the designers (who make trends in the first place) and wearing trends represents an understanding of fashion that exercises understanding of the fashion world and all things that work within it.
Long story short, the Marquis of Fashion’s recommendations are:
If you can rock this trend (as in you have the means to get your hands on a rounded shoulder jacket regardless of cost or scarcity,) then do so! You will single handily be feared and revered by your closest fashion friends mainly because you will have stepped beyond their safety net of fashion and maintained a piece of superiority known as fashion righteousness.
And own your right to rock the rounded shoulder jacket! Though the “less fashion fortunate” may not fully understand your desire to represent, it is your duty to rise above!
Also, don’t be alarmed if your those naysayers are wearing the rounded shoulder next season!
