The world switched its axis willingly for just one night to N 53° W 113°. What drew the attention of the cosmos? The mall… West Edmonton Mall (which is the #1 tourist destination in Edmonton Alberta) and was host to a preview of the epic Western Canada Fashion Week that is to start this Thursday the 22nd as well as the launch of this Septembers issue of Phabrik Magazine (Where yours truly has an article on Eco fashion in it! Check it out here).
The week, (which draws attention from all over Canada and the US,) makes a point to connect local designers and stylists with buyers, investors, and bright opportunities. This Thursday September 22 more than 25 designers and 20 stores from West Edmonton Mall and surrounding Edmonton will showcase their talents and merchandise for the rest of the world to see.
Power house Sandra Sing Fernandes, Executive Producer and Creative Director of Western Canada Fashion Week who is also the Creative Director and Editor in Chief At Phabrik Magazine, paired up with the lovely Anna Alfonso, Senior Manager of Marketing at West Edmonton Mall. This unstoppable duo has teamed up with West Edmonton Mall retailers such as Firoz, Urban, High Grade, and HS (who carry both local and international labels) are bringing us a collaboration of fashion and showmanship this upcoming fashion week.
The collaboration is truly perfect as West Edmonton Mall is the shopping destination and Western Canada Fashion Week is the birth of new creations as well as a pillar of hope for budding designers and stylists. WCFW is also a proud supporter of Good Will and helps less fortunate youth by working with retailers to sponsor seats for youngsters who are interested in fashion. As Sandra says “Kids that have the opportunity to embrace creativity will avoid destructive behaviours.”
The launch party also gave me a chance to sit down with local designer Stanley Carroll and get a quick interview in.
Stanley Carroll’s show will be an amalgamation of seasonless clothes that are the result of experimental asymmetrical silhouettes that are cut away from the body yet maintain their sexiness. Stanley Carroll is all about understated luxury and focuses on his audience and individuals who wear his clothes as opposed to what buyers are looking for or what he is “supposed to “design for the season. In fact… he avoids season pressures altogether by creating clothing that are great to wear all year long and without a season title.
Carroll also creates menswear that is unique in that he experiments with layering and luxurious materials. His result: the men’s skirt. I am no stranger to the men’s skirt and am excited for the Stanley Carroll sample sale! (Click for How to wear the men’s skirt).
Other designers present were Derek Jagodzinsky, My Secret – Rebecka Pichoch Beth Evans, Laura Dreger, and Sofiss by Joanna Wala. I am really looking forward to seeing all of these shows and more at WCFW and you know I will definitely be bringing you all the highlights so stay tuned!
