I’ve been frequenting the area of town that can only be aptly described as hipsterville or “that place you’ve probably never heard of.” And all jokes aside, I only knew it was a hipster haven because of all the man buns! They dotted the space above men’s heads like scrunchies in the early 90’s on women except this messy man bun, man puff, hair grenade, top knot or chonmage (as is the name for the haircut of a samurai), was EVERYWHERE!
Which means, if you want to grow one, now’s certainly not the time… “it’s just, so done”… as a hipster would say.
Colin Farrell, Jared Leto, Orlando Bloom, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Chris Hemsworth, and Jake Gyllenhaal have all, or are rocking the top knot. Last week, I was in the same room as Mr. Gyllenhaal and unfortunately he didn’t hve a man bun, well… not in real life, but on the movie he was starring in. Here’s the story…
Where to begin… I went to the world premiere of Nightcrawler at the Elgin Theater in Toronto during Tiff. I was floored when, after the initial greeting of the cast and Director, they took their seats and I kid you not, Jake sat three seats in front of me. And from this vantage point I could tell he cut off his long (somewhat mangy man hair) which was due to his crazy role as a gaunt version of himself through character “Lou Bloom;” where he was enthralled with the crime reporting lifestyle and finds ways of capitalizing on being at the right place at the right time… sometimes too conveniently. But in short the creepy man bun was perfect for the role, but to be honest it was only creepy because of his extreme weight loss.
But the key to pulling off the look as well as he did, or any man could, is wear the bun sloppy. Be as rugged abut putting that hair in that bun as you can. Use whatever you need to, to throw your hair in that elastic band but don’t use a comb and the more it looks like it is out of your face for necessity – The better. Remember that.
Now go men of the long haired variety. Go forth and whip your hair up and disheveled.
