Shopping for School 101
There are tons of back to school shopping guides out there that tell you where to go for the sharpest pencils or the gummiest erasers but I am here to tell you how to shop for your back to school wardrobe. So grab your razor sharp pencil and take notes because this will be quick and to the point.
I’ll start with the women because they are the ones that read my blog the most. Sorry guys (Click Here to get to the Men’s Back to School Shopping Guide). First up, make sure to buy at least five new outfits or enough new pieces that you can mx and match with your older pieces to make it look like you have a new set of clothes. Let’s face it, thinking as hard as your going to have to will leave you flustered enough, the last thing you’re going to want to worry about is your wardrobe. So put in the effort now while you still have it to give.
I’m teasing… it won’t be that bad… *cough.
Moving on… you are going to invest most of your capital into a Leather Skirt! I’m dead serious. Leather is a hot commodity this season. All over the runway in nearly every form. From red croc printed leather at DKNY to black long skirts at Francesco Scognamiglio, the slits were high or the hemline was all the way up to mid thigh. This means you should use this as the staple in your wardrobe and revolve the rest of your world around this leather piece for the next 10 months. Well… at least 5.
Next up is denim. You have to buy denim as a shirt, you have to buy denim as a pant, buy it in raw form as a jacket, buy it colored as a slim legged jean. Whatever you do just BUY DENIM. I would suggest buying a denim blanket and just wrapping yourself in it but good luck finding a denim blanket. Believe me I tried! Is it referred as “The Canadian Tuxedo” when you wear a complete denim outfit? It is. But when Vogue throws it your way in an editorial then that’s what you wear! Maybe not with that short of shorts though. The exposed pockets look sexy, but trashy too. Best to avoid in the hallways
The Last thing is Be Romantic. I know what you’re thinking… “Why isn’t this in the men’s section?” Well I am referring to clothing and women were seen wearing baroque inspired outfits and amazing tapestries on the runways of Dolce and Gabbana and Balmain so that’s what you’re going to emulate down the aisles of your school. Jazz up those denim short pants with an embroidered jacket and lace top. Pick up a brocade dress in black and gold and throw a cream loose knit sweater around it for a runway look-a-like.
Always try to wear these pieces as a compliment to your own style. Don’t put something on your body that you wouldn’t normally wear and risk looking like a try hard. School is all about new opportunities and broadening your mental horizons so do that, but look good while doing it. Speaking of looking good make sure you leave some dry shampoo in your locker for those moments you have to be physically active and don’t have time to shower. It leaves your hair clean and voluminous instead of flat and unattractive.
Best of luck in the school year and do yourself a favor and remember this: “When the going gets tough, the tough get shopping!”
