Peplums: The Side Wave of the Past
I get that a well placed peplum hides a lot! I really do. But why is it that now all of a sudden these peplums are coming out of the woodwork and taking over semi-formal events. They’re like a pretty looking virus that assumed control of the fashion world a couple years ago and the vice like grip it had over the retail scene was fine for a time… but here I am letting you know, it’s a trend that is out and shouldn’t be worn… at least in the near future.
I’m there at this friends Holiday Party (in November… don’t get me started) and in walk a gaggle of what I’m going to call “fashion girls.” They have the same shade of lipstick because they all got ready at the same house, their hair is nice… and their dresses are… ALL PEPLUM, ALL THE TIME! Whatever… you want to wear a peplum? Be my guest. But please don’t go around talking about trends and how you “wrote the book on fashion.” What book? That doesn’t even make sense. GAH!
If you want to wear a flattering dress that hides your tummy, or muffin top… buy Spanx… JK… well kind of. Okay but if you’re looking for a style that is flattering, look for a high-waisted (not quite empire) dress that bells out a little. You may feel like it’s unflattering but ultimately you’ll look great. The fitted top makes your bust look bigger and gives the illusion that what’s under the high-waisted dress is bikini model perfect.
If you want to show up looking on trend, then grab a pinafore dress (apron style dress) from embellished florals to black leather, the pinafore style is huge for the season and flattering for most body types. Of course pants to a black tie formal party for a woman can also be a good option for a trendy take on elegant womenswear. Be daring and wear raw silk blush colored pants or gold lamé pants. These paired with a white wrap cotton poplin top and bang you’re evening is instantly so much more stylized than a peplum dress.
Another way to look astonishingly on trend is to invest in a sexy smoking jacket. Oversized is not a bad thing here and interesting colors and textiles should be your goal. White with a yellow lapel, classic black on black or something more interesting like Balmain’s detailed embroidered smoking jacket is exactly what you’re looking for.
Another thing to be wary of… your sales associate at whatever retailer you’re shopping at will try and sell you a peplum dress. It’s an easy sale for them and the clients usually go for it so stay strong and keep it on trend.
