Jean Paul Gaultier Funk and Fur at Paris Fashion Week
What a collection by the Enfant Terrible! The man’s a rock star first, fashion designer second. For his fall 2012 runway, shown in Paris on March 3rd, JPG blasted out a collection filled with metallics, brilliantly funked out dyed furs and staggering leather.
This collection had nothing to do with the poise and subtlety of last season, non, this season he seemed to be channelling New York City and punk rock of the 80’s, as he took fashion by the tenders and threw it against the Silver foiled (Andy Warhol’s, factory?) backdrop, listening to Velvet Underground.
The look and feel of the runway should have come as no surprise after seeing the invitation, with “caution” yellow, tagged in a spray-paint bubble font with graffiti-style letters in black and red.
Andrej Pejic, one of my fav’s, walked the runway again fro Gaultier and is rumoured to be doing his next men’s fragrance campaign, as well making his first Hollywood debut.
The looks were electric, with a mix of safety orange (big color trend), turquoise, rust, bronze terracotta, silver and brown and the prints were bold, incorporating licence plates and street signs that read “Gautier” in graffiti-style print.
Some may say that the show felt too far from home for the french designer, but frankly this is classic Jean Paul Gaultier. Every now and then he’ll do something a little extreme, seemingly on a whim (possibly a tantrum) gain a lot of attention and then blow our pants off by doing something extraordinarily refined and elegant in his next show…. How else would he have earned his nickname. Love it! In any even, I imagine that there is going to be a very high demand for these pieces when they hit retailers.
