The Man Tote Bag and How To Pull It Off
A handbag is a serious thing when it comes to men and outfitting. It can be your functional satchel offering you date saving gum or mints, life giving water and protein bars on demand and can assist in carry your hideously overweight Vogue or Vanity Fair. But how do you wear it without looking like a pansy wrapped in daisy’s? Well that’s simple.
First if you don’t know how to match with brown, read the article… then come back and finish this one… okay great.
First, note the primary color of the man-tote and that same color or an analogous color, will be the accent within your outfit. Secondly, the accent color on the handbag will represent the main color on your outfit. So in the example above, that warm mustardy-brown is my main color on the handbag and I wore a pant in a similar color alongside the yellow-orange tortoise shell on the frames of the sunglasses. Then the black trim on the bag matched my sweater, coat and boots.
Don’t get too matchy-matchy or risk standing out like a sore thumb. Fashion week is a great place to observe street style looks that take this concept and practice it religiously. The show goers will be wearing a cobalt blue button down with a cobalt blue bag then everything else will be the trim on the bag (typically black). It makes a look pop and is sure to get photographed by street style bloggers.
In the above pic, Mariano Di Vaio is wearing a cognac backpack with a complimentary belt and pops of that color are also in the scarf. The rest of the outfit is a simple black or a neutral beige that is tied in with the scarf.
Well I wish you many outfit successes with your man-totes and if you find a great new bag be sure to leave me a comment in the comments below and tell me how you styled it.
