Day one of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York is always full of energy and excitement so naturally when a collection shows that is less than superior it ends up having a touch of anticlimactic energy. Nicholas K kicked off the week with a sigh. ..however, Richard Chai Love and Tadashi Shoji unleashed an astonishing amount of hype-worthy pieces down the runway.
Nicholas K hopped aboard the Native American theme this season. I loved some of the pieces, but feathers in headbands are truly over the top (pun intended) and stereotypical for my tastes, not to mention the makeup across the eyes and face traditionally used to ward off evil spirits by the Apache people. Even if the designers are Apache Native American or part Apache Native American I think using feathers in headbands is too much of a nod to the past.. whereas the clothing didn’t really follow suit. If anything the looks were futuristic and inventive… so why hold onto the feathers? It beats me! In fact… Apache Native Americans rarely wore feathers at all…
David Tlale showed without the support of his PR company (as he never paid them), but the clothing is what matters so that’s what I’ll talk about. The pieces were staged in “The Box” presentation area which is one of the most hectic areas to show a collection (at least for trying to snap a shot), gotta say though, the looks were promising. Through swarms of people one could notice intricate, graceful and delicate details on tops. The designer certainly has promise… now stop pissing off the higher-ups in fashion (Kelly Cutrone) and maybe you’ll get somewhere;)
The all too popular BCBG Maxazria was up next and their lineup was packed with pastel cotton poplin (say it five times fast) that went on for days. The models needed a little bit extra color on their cheeks for this one as the shades were primed to wash out any pale skin they donned. The finale looks were- as usual – “pretty” and… VERY SALEABLE!
Two Words… Jonas Brothers! That’s right these hunky/cute (depending on which one you’re referring to) brothers were sitting front row where they got to revel in the splendor of the Richard Chai Love. The menswear that walked was structured in a near militant way with leathers (thanks to their collaboration with the Andrew Marc label) and dynamic alternative design ideas on proportion and silhouette including wide legged trousers and distended shoulder seam placement creating a more masculine look.
The Richard Chai woman was indeed in love with the deconstructed men’s inspired shirting, the geometric prints and the body hugging leathers. I think New York Fashion Week buyers are anticipating Market just to snap up the Spring 2014 Richard Chai Love pieces.
The Supima cotton show took talent from design schools around the country and allowed them to design an outfit from cotton… the result? One of the best shows today. The grads rocked it out of the park in terms of design and delivery. The pieces were shown and shortly after was an informal presentation/chat with the designers and one lucky winner received $10,000.00. Mercedes-Benx Fashion Week had this to say about the competition:
Last season I had the pleasure of going backstage at Tadashi Shoji and get to see the whole experience from hair and make-up to the glitz and glam of the runway show. I’ll never forget it! This season the Tadashi Show was no less glamorous with pastel tartans intermingling with lace creating a flirty concoction that was absolutely perfect for anything from a sweet sixteen party to Rosh Hashanah. I was, however, surprised to see a peplum on the runway… mind you, it was just below the bust and though not very attractive… well actually…no, that’s all… it wasn’t very nice… you may even say ugly… but I assure you. Thankfully It was the only one on the runway.
Candela made me scratch my head last season and this season was no different. The jester-like knits became the butt of many jokes outside the studio they were shown in. Of course it wasn’t all laughable. I think a few of the dresses were really cute and very wearable. I guess the collection turned out to be less than the value of its parts. I think the stage would have been great if you were a cat. There, I said it.
Whenever models smile on the runway two things happen:
1) I feel like I’m in a mall and
2) I feel my fight or flight instinct go into high gear in anticipation of them pouncing on me and gnawing away at my body because they’re so freaking hungry!
Basically I was petrified with fear the entire Desigual Spring 2014 presentation… What did you think of the show?
My favorite show of the day was the Marissa Webb collection which represented that moment in a progressive house song where the buildup peaks, time freezes and you know the bass is just around the corner. This aggressive anticipation was representative in her narrow waists, leather trimmings and bustiers. Yes… bustiers! I really had a hard time choosing only a few images to use from the collection… literally the whole show was great. Girly… and great.
Day 2 of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is going to be intense and just as crazy so stay tuned as I bring you all the juicyness of MBFW and NYC this whole week!
