Richard Nicoll Spring Summer 2013
There are few who take risks in the category of menswear and partly because it is usually frowned upon, but partly because it is extra difficult to pull off. There is doing something… then there is doing something well. Crafting menswear that will push the boundaries of ‘what is fashion’ yet maintain a clean sartorial feel, now that is talent. And Richard Nicoll certainly proved his talent at his Spring 2013 show.
The men in the show were all similar to the typical male model walking any menswear show, however, what set them apart was the way in which they wore their interesting assortment of materials. From a rubberized shorts and windbreakers, to sheer bodysuits, the designers choice of fabrics forced the viewer to rethink their more traditional use.
The white athletic type suits and the fun reverse zip jackets were a hint of what Spring 2013 is all about… being active. Why zip your jacket down when you can zip it up and feel like Superman? These are questions I’m sure Richard was thinging of when designing this collection. The sporty rubber short, cut mid-thigh, drove this seasons inspiration (pro fitness) home.
The godawful accessories were a major issue with this collection. One of the looks had white pants and a grey dress shirt, but the problem area was the necklace they chose to style the outfit with. It appeared to be a square that was on a long string… and perhaps it was the color combination or the length of the string, or even the shape of the square pendant, but the poor model just ended up looking like a geek at the Genius Bar at a Mac store.
No offence to Apple employees but it looked a bit too nerdy for the runway. Even if that wasn’t the intention (or even if it was), oops… hopefully simpler accessories are in store next season.
