E. Tautz Spring Summer 2013
If there ever was a menswear collection that had more color and color blocking than the E. Tautz show today in London I would be surprised. The vibrant pinks, yellows, and blues were enough to wake the dead. In a good way. When Gwenyth Paltrow and Lana Del Rey are wearing capes and getting praise, it wasn’t long before it would ake an appearance in a menswear show and that is just what happened at E. Tautz. Think bold pink and now put that on a cape over a black suit and there was the first look.
The collection was called ‘School Colors for Cricket’ and I think most men would agree that having bright pink as your school colors may bring jeers from rival schools. Then again there would be quite the assortment of girls so that may be an attractive quality to attend. Regardless the colors seemed a bit too piercing to be school colors.
The colors were obviously used to grab attention but they were more than a pop color, and made their way into the meat of the collection. This tactic could be risky for sales but is great for publicity. Other elements that stole the show were the oversized pepto bismol pink pants that appeared to be made from nylon and could very well be rain proof. I suppose that could be useful in London for Spring, but then again are they nice?
A lot of the pieces in the collection seemed to be all flash with little practical wear-ability. While one person may think to themselves “Wow that formless blue coat is exactly what I’ve always been looking for…” it is unlikely that two people will have that same thought. So from a creative standpoint the collection was something interesting to see that appears to be a summation of some bold trends, but from a saleability stand point the line may be hurting on the orders side of things.
That being said there were 26 looks and there was a handful of well fitting shorts, dress shirts, and labcoats. So each to their own… and apparently designer Patrick Grant is a big fan of all these things. he must be a very bubbly man.
